Middle School FAQ
I’m going to miss the first practice of recreational rowing. Can I still register for the program?
Yes! All the required safety information is covered in the first practice. If you will miss the first day, please get in contact with your coach to determine a time to make up the safety information that was missed.
My schedule has changed. Is it possible to switch to a different program time?
Yes. Please email [email protected] ASAP and let them know which program you are currently attending, which class will work, and the date you need to transfer. Switches are subject to space availability, as classes fill quickly
Why don’t we go on the water during the first week of practice?
Because at SRA, safety always comes first! You need a solid knowledge and safety base before going on the water. In order to prepare you for lake time, the first few practices teach you the basics: safety precautions, the boathouse routine, the rowing stroke, rowing terminology and coxswain commands. You will also watch a required Rowing Safety DVD and practice the stroke on dock rowers.
What should I wear once we are on the water?
Spandex or athletic fit clothing works best! The snugger the clothing the better. Loose pants and shorts can get caught in the seat slides and loose tops can get caught on the oar handle. Bright colored clothing is also helpful as it allows the coaches to better see the rowers on the water.
Does the middle school team get to race?
Yes! At the end of each season (fall, spring, and summer) the last day is an inter-team race!
I loved middle school rowing team. How can I keep rowing?
If you are still in 6th-8th grade you should continue to row on the middle school team during fall, spring, and summer. If you are going into 9th grade, you can join the competitive team for any full season: the summer prior to your 9th grade year, the fall, or the spring. Please contact the competitive girls coach or the competitive boys coach with questions.
