Daniel James Brown is The New York Times bestselling author of The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Brown's other books include Under a Flaming Sky: The Great Hinckley Firestorm of 1894, which traces the personal stories and social, economic, and environmental causes of the Great Hinkley Fire, The Indifferent Stars Above: The Harrowing Saga of a Donner Party Bride, which follows the footsteps of Sarah Graves, a young bride who left her home in Illinois in the spring of 1846, only to become one of a handful of the ill-fated Donner Party members who attempted to hike out of the Sierra Nevada to save herself and her family, and his second New York Times bestseller, Facing the Mountain: A True Story of Japanese American Heroes in World War ll, a gripping World War II saga of patriotism, highlighting the contributions and sacrifices that Japanese immigrants and their American-born children made for the sake of the nation.
Brown grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and attended the University of California at Berkeley. He taught writing at San Jose State University and Stanford before becoming a technical writer and editor, first in Silicon Valley and later at Microsoft. He now writes narrative nonfiction books full time. His primary interest as a writer is in bringing compelling historical events to life as vividly and accurately as he can.
He lives in the country outside of Seattle, Washington with his wife, two daughters, and an assortment of cats, dogs, chickens, and honeybees. When he is not writing, he is likely to be birding, gardening, fly fishing, reading American history, or chasing bears away from the bee hives.

About this Free Virtual Event
Daniel James Brown will be joining SRA virtually for an intimate discussion via Teams on October 28th, 2021 from 4:00pm-5:00pm PST. This event is FREE and open to anyone!
In this virtual event, we will discuss Daniel James Brown's motivation for telling the story of The Boys in the Boat. We will discuss his views on the advantages of rowing and how his book can teach anyone in any organization, group, or community (big or small) what it takes to find your "swing". Rowing is a sport that can transform an individual, especially among youth participants. From gaining leadership and life skills to increased access to higher education through athletic scholarships- rowing has and continues to transform countless lives.
Sammamish Rowing Association wants to grow our community and improve diversity in the sport of rowing. Our goal for this season is to fully fund five scholarships for our junior rowers. These scholarships will cover all fees, uniforms, and travel expenses. Our goal is to raise $50,000 (around $10,000 per scholarship) to make our sport more accessible to others. If you believe rowing should be an inclusive sport. please consider making a donation to directly make an impact on someone's life.
We are eager to make rowing as accessible to as many athletes as possible. Funding scholarships is just the first step. Please consider helping us spread awareness about our event, sport, and goal to make rowing more accessible and diverse as a sport. SRA looks forward to including you in our quest to make this truly a sport for all.
